Sergeant Major Stephen A. Griffin

Sergeant Major Griffin completed recruit training at MCRD Parris Island, SC in October 1993 and was assigned to Camp Geiger, NC for Marine Combat Training followed by Infantry Training at Camp Pendleton, CA as a Light Armored Vehicle Crewman (0313).

In January 1994, Lance Corporal Griffin received orders to 2nd Light Armored Infantry Battalion, Camp Lejeune, NC.  During his tour with 2nd Light Armored Infantry Battalion, Lance Corporal Griffin completed a deployment with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit and was meritoriously promoted to Corporal.

In September 1996, Corporal Griffin reported to Marine Security Guard School, Quantico, VA for training as a Marine Security Guard (8151).  After graduating, Corporal Griffin was assigned to Marine Security Guard Detachment Buenos Aires, Argentina.  After his tour in Buenos Aires and promotion to Sergeant he reported to Marine Security Guard Detachment Beijing, China.  While in Beijing, Sergeant Griffin was assigned as the Assistant Detachment Commander.

In May 1999, Sergeant Griffin reported for duty as a Light Armored Vehicle Crewman with 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Camp Pendleton, CA.  During his tour with 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion he was promoted to Staff Sergeant and completed two deployments including participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom and humanitarian operations in East Timor.

In December 2003, Staff Sergeant Griffin returned to Marine Security Guard School to attend the Detachment Commanders course.  Upon graduating as the Honor Graduate, Staff Sergeant Griffin was assigned to Marine Security Guard Detachment Sana’a, Yemen as the Detachment Commander.  On January 1st, 2005 he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant.  In May 2005, Gunnery Sergeant Griffin reported to his second post as the Detachment Commander, Marine Security Guard Detachment Bern, Switzerland. 

In June 2007, Gunnery Sergeant Griffin reported for duty as the Company Gunnery Sergeant with Company A, 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Camp Lejeune, NC.  In December 2009, Gunnery Sergeant Griffin was selected for promotion to First Sergeant and was subsequently frocked and received orders to 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines.  While assigned to 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines, First Sergeant Griffin served as the Headquarters and Service Company First Sergeant and the Weapons Company First Sergeant.  While serving as the Weapons Company First Sergeant he completed a deployment to Iraq.

In March 2010, First Sergeant Griffin reported for duty with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines, as the Inspector and Instructor First Sergeant.  In November 2012, First Sergeant Griffin was selected for promotion to Sergeant Major.   

In July 2013, Sergeant Major Griffin was assigned as the Sergeant Major of Recruiting Station Atlanta, Georgia. During this assignment he earned a Bachelor of Science degree.  Following a successful tour on Recruiting Duty, Sergeant Major Griffin was selected to attend Marine Corps Command and Staff College. He reported for school in August 2016, completed the Master of Military Studies degree, and graduated in June 2017. 

In July 2017, Sergeant Major Griffin assumed the duties as the MAG-29 Sergeant Major.  While assigned to MAG-29 Sergeant Major Griffin participated in exercise Trident Juncture serving as the MAG ACE SgtMaj.  In May 2019, Sergeant Major Griffin was selected to serve as the First Marine Aircraft Wing Sergeant Major.

His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (w/gold star in lieu of 2nd award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (w/silver star in lieu of 6th award and combat distinguishing device), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (w/gold star in lieu of 2nd award), and the Combat Action Ribbon.
