Biography

Sergeant Major
SgtMaj Edwin A. Mota

Sergeant Major Edwin A. Mota enlisted in the Marine Corps on 6 June 1995 and completed recruit training at MCRD Parris Island, SC during August 1995.

Following recruit training, SgtMaj Mota attended Infantry Training Battalion at the School Of Infantry located at Camp Geiger, NC where he earned the MOS (0331) as a Machine Gunner. 

SgtMaj Mota reported to his first duty station at 1st Battalion 8th Marines in November of 1995 for duty as a Gunner in Bravo Company.  There, he served as a team leader and eventually as the section leader for the machine gun section of Bravo Company 1/8. While assigned to 1Bn, 8TH Marines, Sergeant Major Mota deployed with the 26th MEU in 1996 as well as a unit deployment to Panama in 1997.

Sergeant Major Mota was then transferred to Marine Combat Training Battalion, School of Infantry, Camp Geiger, NC for duty as a squad leader in February 1998. 

SgtMaj Mota transferred to Parris Island, SC to attend Drill Instructor School in September 1999.  Upon graduating from DI school, he was assigned to 1st Recruit Training Battalion for duty as a Drill Instructor.  During his tour, SgtMaj Mota served as a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor.  In addition he also served as the Testing Staff Noncommissioned Officer in Charge at the Academic Instruction Unit.

SgtMaj Mota was then transferred to 1st Battalion 6th Marines for duty as a Platoon Sergeant in January 2003.  During his tour with V16, he served as a Rifle Platoon Sergeant for one deployment to Afghanistan and as the Scout Sniper Platoon Sergeant for a deployment to Iraq. 

SgtMaj Mota transferred to North Carolina State University to serve as the Assistant Marine Officer Instructor for the Naval ROTC unit.  During his tour of duty he also augmented the Bull Dog Program at Officer Candidate School, Quantico VA as well as the Mountain Warfare Training Center package for all midshipmen in the country within the Naval ROTC affiliated schools. 

In March of 2009, SgtMaj Mota reported to 3rd Bn, 6th Marines for duty.   During his tour with V36, he served as the Company First Sergeant for India and Weapons Company and conducted two deployments to Afghanistan.  SgtMaj Mota was then transferred to the School of Infantry (East) in May 2012, where he served as Company First Sergeant for Bravo Company.

In April 2014, SgtMaj Mota reported to 2D Marine Raider Battalion for duty and served as the Battalion Sergeant Major until January 2016.

SgtMaj Mota’s personal awards include the Bronze Star medal, Meritorious Service medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medal, the Good Conduct medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
