MALS-12 Commanding Officer
Lieutenant Colonel Walter M. Raines

Lieutenant Colonel Raines, a native of Georgia, graduated from Auburn University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation Management.  After graduation, he owned and operated a landscape nursery business in Georgia for ten years before enlisting into the Marine Corps in 2004.

After graduation from Parris Island, he attended Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) training as a Flight Equipment Marine at Naval Air Station Pensacola where he was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.  Upon graduation, he reported to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron (MALS) 39 on board Camp Pendleton.  During this period, he was selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program (ECP) and subsequently attended Officer Candidate School in Quantico.

After completion of The Basic School in June 2006, Second Lieutenant Raines was assigned to MALS-31 at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Beaufort.  During this period, he completed the Aviation Supply Basic Course in Athens and received the MOS of 6602.  During this tour, Lieutenant Raines filled the Officer-in-Charge billet of multiple divisions, to include Squadron Support Division, Supply Accounting Division, and Consumable Management Division, as well as the Assistant Aviation Supply Officer.  In December 2007, he was promoted to First Lieutenant.

In July 2009, Lieutenant Raines checked into Weapons and Field Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island.  Upon arrival, he was assigned as the Starlite Range Officer-in-Charge.  He was promoted to the rank of Captain in January 2010.  In May 2010, he took over command of Range Company and held command until selection and assignment as a Student at Expeditionary Warfare School (EWS) in Quantico during 2011.

Upon graduation from EWS in May 2012, Captain Raines reported to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 29 on board MCAS New River where he was assigned as the Assistant Aviation Supply Officer.  During this tour, he deployed to Camp Bastion, Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM as the Aviation Supply Officer of MALS-40.

In December 2014, Captain Raines reported back to MALS-31 where he was assigned as the Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) Officer.  In April 2015, Captain Raines was then reassigned as the Assistant Aviation Supply Officer.  During this time he was promoted to Major in February 2016.

Major Raines resigned from active-duty and transitioned to the Marine Corps Reserves in May 2017.  Upon transition to the Reserves, Major Raines was assigned to U.S. Marine Corps Forces South in Miami where he served as an Aviation Logistics Planner and Operations Officer within the Logistics Division (G-4).

In December 2019, Major Raines was selected to return to active duty and reported to MALS-31 to serve as the Executive Officer.  In July 2021, Major Raines reported to NAVSUP Weapons System Support in Philadelphia to serve as the Allowancing & Outfitting (N41) Department Head.  During this period, Major Raines was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in December 2021.

In June 2022, Lieutenant Colonel Raines assumed command of MALS-12 at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan.

Lieutenant Colonel Raines is married to the former Stacey Jane Brown and has two daughters, Kyra and Sydney.  His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
