Major Wesley C. Newman
Major Newman enlisted in the Reserves of the United States Marine Corps in May of 2005. He graduated from Recruit Training at MCRD Parris Island, SC in August of that year. Following Recruit Training, he reported to Rations Company, 4th Supply Battalion, 4th FSSG on Anacostia Annex in Washington, D.C. to serve as a warehouse supply clerk. Lance Corporal Newman attended Marine Combat Training at the School of Infantry, East in August of 2006.
Second Lieutenant Newman was commissioned in December of 2006 at Officer Candidate’s School in Quantico, VA. Following The Basic School, he attended Naval Flight Officer training in Pensacola, FL. In July 2009, First Lieutenant Newman was winged as a Naval Flight Officer and reported to MCAS Miramar, CA for Fleet Replacement Squadron training at VMFAT-101. After syllabus completion at the FRS in September 2010, he reported to Marine Aircraft Group 31 in Beaufort, SC and was assigned to the Hawks of VMFA(AW)-533.
As the squadron Embarkation Officer, Captain Newman deployed with the Hawks to the Western Pacific from January to July 2011 in support of the Unit Deployment Program. During the squadron’s deployment, Captain Newman ensured movements from MCAS Iwakuni, Japan to Korat, Thailand and Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan went smoothly. Upon return from WestPac, Captain Newman assumed the additional duty of Communications Officer for the squadron. In November 2011, the squadron executed a deployment for training (DFT) in support of Enhanced Mohave Viper in 29 Palms, CA.
In March 2012, Captain Newman was assigned as the S-4 department head just prior to a DFT to NAF El Centro, CA in support of the MAWTS-1 Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) course. In October of that year, the squadron again deployed to NAF El Centro in support of WTI. Captain Newman was assigned to the Maintenance Department as the Powerline OIC at the beginning of this DFT.
In March 2013, the squadron again deployed to the Western Pacific in support of the Unit Deployment Program. During this UDP, the Hawks executed DFT’s to Clark Air Base, Philippines and Andersen Air Force Base, Guam. The Hawks returned to MCAS Beaufort in September 2013.
Captain Newman attended resident Expeditionary Warfare School during the academic year 2014-2015, and was once again assigned to VMFA(AW)-533 in Beaufort, SC in June of 2015. During this tour with the Hawks, Captain Newman served as the Quality Assurance Officer and S-4 officer for a deployment in support of SPMAGTF-CR-CC from April to October 2016. In October of 2016, after being promoted to Major, he was assigned as Assistant Operations Officer. The Hawks deployed to the Western Pacific in March of 2018.
Major Newman attended resident Command and Staff College during the academic year 2018-2019 and earned a Master of Military Studies degree from Marine Corps University. Following this academic year, Major Newman reported to VMFA(AW)-242 aboard MCAS Iwakuni, Japan to serve as the Executive Officer.
Major Newman’s decorations include the Air Medal-Strike/Flight with numeral 5, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
