Sergeant Major Provens enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in September 2002, and attended Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA, after Recruit Training he attended Marine Combat training at Camp Pendleton, CA. Upon Completion of MCT he reported to the Marine Corps Cannoneer School at Fort Sill, OK where he received his primary MOS of 0811. In March 2003, he was promoted to Private First Class and received orders to India Battery 5th Battalion 10th Marines, Camp Lejeune, NC for duty as a Cannoneer.
In November 2003, he was promoted to Lance Corporal, during his time with 5th Battalion 10th Marines Lance Corporal Provens went on two deployments to Okinawa Japan, as part of the Unit Deployment Program (UDP) and was promoted to the rank of Corporal. In November 2004 Corporal Provens attended the M198 section chief course and assigned as a Howitzer section chief during this period\ till August 2006.
In September 2006, Corporal Provens reported to Detachment 3 Team 2 Civil Affairs Group and was promoted to Sergeant in November 2006. From March 2007 to February Sergeant Provens deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and held the billets of Logistics Chief, Convoy Commander, and Training Non Commissioned Officer.
In March 2008 Sergeant Provens attended the M777A2 Section Chief School and reported to Romeo Battery, 5th Battalion 10th Marines for duty as a Section Chief. In October 2008 Sergeant Provens reported to the United States Marine Corps Field Artillery Detachment, Fort Sill, OK, Marine Corps Cannoneer School as an Instructor and held billets of Detachment Colors Sergeant, Platoon Sergeant and Motor Transport Chief. In February 2011 Sergeant Provens was promoted to Staff Sergeant. In September 2011 Staff Sergeant Provens reported to First Marine Special Operations Battalion in Camp Pendleton CA for an Individual Augmentation Billet and was assigned as the (HQ) Headquarters’ Company Gunnery Sergeant for deployment to Afghanistan.
In May 2013 Staff Sergeant Provens checked into Alpha Battery 1st Battalion, 12th Marines and assumed the duties as the Local Security Chief for the Battery. During this time in Alpha Battery, Staff Sergeant Provens held the billets of Headquarters’ and Howitzer Platoon Sergeant. While assigned to Alpha Battery took part in two deployments to Okinawa Japan, Korea, Camp Fuji Japan, and three Integrated Training Exercises in 29 Palms CA and numerous field operations in and around the islands of Oahu and Hawaii.
In May 2016 Staff Sergeant Provens received orders to the Staff Noncommissioned Officer Academy Okinawa Japan, for duty as a Faculty Advisor. In July of 2017 Staff Sergeant Provens was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant. During this tour Gunnery Sergeant Provens held billets of Sergeants School Chief, Staff Noncommissioned Officer in charge (SNCOIC) of the Career School and progressed through the Master Faculty Advisor Program to Master Faculty Advisor. In July 2019 Gunnery Sergeant Provens assumed the billet of Battery Gunnery Sergeant, for Hotel Battery 3D Battalion 14th Marines, Richmond, Va.
In July 2021 Gunnery Sergeant Provens was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant and assumed the responsibility of Company First Sergeant for Support Company, MWSS-171, MAG-12, Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan.
In May of 2023 First Sergeant Provens reported to Staff Noncommissioned Officer Academy, Hawaii for duty as Director.
In February of 2025 Sergeant Major Provens reported back to MWSS-171, MAG-12, Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan and assumed responsibility as Command Senior Enlisted Leader.
Sergeant Major Provens holds an Associates in General studies, dual Bachelor's of Science in Political Science and Psychology from the University of Maryland and a graduate certificate from Liberty University in Enthnomusicology. Sergeant Major Provens personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with three gold stars, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with one gold star.
