Colonel Lee W. Hemming

Col Hemming graduated from Gettysburg College with a degree in Business Management and Economics. Colonel Hemming attended the Officer Candidate Course (OCC) and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in August of 2001. After his commissioning as a Second Lieutenant, he was assigned to Fox Company at The Basic School. Colonel Hemming went on to graduate from the Infantry Officer Course 4-02. In December of 2003 he received his Naval Aviator wings and subsequently selected to fly the AH-1W “Super Cobra”.  

Col Hemming’s operational assignments include: Assistant Operations Officer and Weapons and Tactics Instructor with HMLA-269 at MCAS New River, NC, where he completed three combat tours to Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) from 2004 to 2008. After his tour at HML/A-269, Colonel Hemming assisted in the activation of HMLA-467 at Cherry Point, NC. In 2013, Colonel Hemming returned to the Sabers of HMLA-467 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) as the Assistant Operations Officer and then as the Aircraft Maintenance Officer. In 2019 Colonel Hemming took command of HMLA-167.   

Col Hemming’s staff assignments include: Instructor pilot and AH-1W Division Head, Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1, Yuma, AZ; G-3 Assistant Air/Fires Officer, Assistant Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) Program Manager, and JTAC Evaluator, Marine Special Operations Forces Command (MARSOC), Stone Bay, NC. Headquarters Marine Corps, Officer Assignments, Aviation Lieutenant Colonel Monitor; And Command Inspector General,1st Marine Aircraft Wing.  

Col Hemming’s military education includes graduating as a distinguished graduate with a Master of Military Studies from Marine Corps University (2013) and the US Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania where he received a master’s in Strategic Studies (2022).  

Colonel Hemming’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (gold star in lieu of third award), Air Medal with numeral “1” for individual action and Strike/Flight numeral “16”, Navy Commendation Medal (gold star in lieu of fourth award), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
