Lieutenant Colonel James R. Lomsdale

Lieutenant Colonel Lomsdale graduated from the University of Washington in 2006 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps in November 2007 after graduating from Officer Candidates School.  He reported to The Basic School (TBS) in January 2008 and received the primary MOS of Direct Air Support Control Officer and orders to Marine Air Support Squadron 3 (MASS-3).  After checking into MASS-3 in July 2008, he completed the Air Support Control Officers Course from September to December 2008.  While at MASS-3 he would serve consecutive tours with assignments as a Platoon Commander, Company Executive Officer, Company Commander and Squadron Weapons and Tactics Training Program Officer.  During that time, he was also promoted twice, both during separate deployments.  He promoted to First Lieutenant in November 2009 while deployed as an Air Support Element OIC(A) and MACG Det(-) OIC aboard the 15th Marine Expeditionary Force in 2010 and then to Captain while deployed in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM 12.1 and 12.2 as a Senior Air Director in the 1st Marine Division Combat Operations Center in Helmand Province, Afghanistan in 2012. 

Upon returning from Afghanistan in August 2012, Captain Lomsdale attended the Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course where he obtained a secondary MOS of 7277, Weapons and Tactics Instructor.  He served as the MASS-Weapons and Tactics Training Program Officer from October to May 2013.  Captain Lomsdale was then selected for and attended Expeditionary Warfare School in Quantico, VA from May 2013 to May 2014.  While at EWS he was screened and selected to be an instructor at TBS in Quantico, VA.

Captain Lomsdale reported to TBS in May 2014 and was assigned as a primary instructor for the WARFEX Package, MAGTF Section, Warfighting Instructor Group until April 2015 when he was selected as a Staff Platoon Commander, 4th Platoon, Delta Company 4-15 in May 2015 and then as Executive Officer of Charlie Company 3-16 in February 2016.  He completed his time at TBS as a Master Instructor and primary for the FINEX and WARFEX packages in May 2017.  During this time, he also earned his master’s degree in leadership studies from Marshall University in 2017 and was selected to attend Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC) in June 2017. 

Captain Lomsdale promoted to Major in October 2017 and graduated from CGSC in June 2018 as the #2 graduate of 1133 students and #1 of 27 Marine Majors in the course, receiving the General Thomas Holcomb Award.  While at CGSC, Major Lomsdale earned qualification as a Joint Air Operations Officer and certification as a Joint Planner.  From CGSC Major Lomsdale was again assigned to MASS-3 where he would serve as the Operations Officer from June 2018 to July 2019.  In July 2019, Maj Lomsdale reported to MARCENT and deployed as the Deputy Marine Liaison Officer to the Combined Forces Air Component Commander and Combined Air and Space Operations Center in Al Udeid, Qatar.

He returned from this Deployment in January 2020 and attended the Joint Forces Staff College and received orders to Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATFS) where he would serve from June 2020 to June 2023.  While assigned to JIATFS, Major Lomsdale served as a Battle Watch Captain and J37 Chief of Training and Assessments from June 2020 to October 2021, J3 Executive Officer from October 2021 to June 2022, and the J52 Chief of Resources and Requirements from June 2022 to June 2023. In June 2023, Major Lomsdale executed orders to 1st Marine Aircraft Wing (1st MAW) in Okinawa, Japan serving as the Wing Aviation Command and Control Officer.  While serving as the 1st Maw WACCO, Major Lomsdale was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in September 2023. In May 2025, LtCol Lomsdale took command of Marine Air Support Squadron 2.

His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3), Joint Service Achievement Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

LtCol Lomsdale Lomsdale is married to Lauren Lomsdale of Clifton, VA. Together they have three daughters: Evelyn June (13), Savannah May (10), and Annabeth Kate (9) and two dogs: Sachi (Ryuku-mix) and Charlotte (Golden Retriever).
