U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Levi Dalton, a CH-53E powerplant mechanic with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron (HMH) 462, oversees a main rotor head torque check procedure on a CH-53E at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Japan, Aug. 31, 2021. Dalton is a Collateral Duty Quality Assurance Representative for HMH-462 and conducted the torque check when the aircraft conducted 2 hours of flight after the rotor head was replaced.

U.S. Marines with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron (HMH) 465 offload and rebuild a CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter on MCAS Futenma, Okinawa, Japan, Mar. 12, 2021. The CH-53E was transferred from Hawaii to Okinawa in support of Force Design 2030. The CH-53E was disassembled by HMH-463 in Hawaii to accommodate transport in a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft with the Alaska Air National Guard. Marines with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 465, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, refuel and resupply an F-35B Lightning II jet with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121, 1st MAW, during Distributed STOVL Operations (DSO) on Ie Shima island, Japan, Jan. 23, 2019. The rehearsal enabled CH-53E helicopters to re-fuel and re-arm F-35B Lightning II jets from a Forward Arming and Refueling Point (FARP), significantly improving the operational flexibility, survivability, and lethality of the F-35B. The FARP provided a hot refuel and hot reload for multiple aircraft with All Up Rounds (AUR), also known as a completely assembled weapon, giving pilots the ability to stay in the fight longer, and accomplish more missions in a shorter period of time from austere locations. For the first time, more than 2,000 U.S. Marines joined with approximately 1,500 service members with the Japan Self-Defense Force to support the first iteration of Exercise Northern Viper 2017, at Misawa Air Base and the island of Hokkaido, Japan, August 10-28, 2017. Northern Viper, an annual joint contingency exercise, tests the interoperability and bilateral capability of the JSDF and U.S. Marine Corps forces to work together across a variety of areas including peacekeeping operations, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. This exercise enhances and improves interoperability at the tactical level between the Marines and JSDF to keep the forces formidable and adaptive. NV17 showcases a highly-capable, forward-deployed U.S. military presence positioned with their Japanese partners to directly support the security of the Indo-Asia- Pacific region.
