U.S. Sailor RP2 Phillips McCandless with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 1 ran a 100K Ultra Marathon on Okinawa, Japan, Dec. 16, 2018. McCandless put his strength and endurance to the ultimate test by running over 60 miles. Every 1st Marine Aircraft Wing Marine and Sailor must be physically fit, regardless of age, grade, gender, or duty assignment. U.S. military members gather in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands for exercise Valiant Shield 2018. Valiant Shield is a biennial, U.S. only exercise with a focus of integration of joint training among U.S. forces. This training enables real world proficiency in sustaining joint forces through detecting, locating, tracking and engaging units at sea, in the air, on land and in cyberspace.
