MWSS-172 engineers demolish section of runway on Ie Shima

U.S. Marines with Marine Wing Support Squadron 172, Marine Aircraft Group 36, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing demolish a section of runway using an Asphalt Zipper at Ie Shima Training Facility, Okinawa, Japan, March 17-19, 2025. The Asphalt Zipper is used for road repair and reclamation, grinding asphalt and mixing it with the base to create a reusable surface. Marines used the Asphalt Zipper to demolish the airstrip, allowing them to replace it with a higher quality runway capable of supporting aircraft landings. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Lance Cpl. U.S. Marines, Navy, and Airmen work together during exercise Cope North (CN) 20 to recover and repair an airstrip from a simulated attack, clearing unexploded ordinance using massive mechanical equipment and explosive ordinance disposal, as well as repairing damage with combat engineers at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, Feb. 13, 2020. Exercise CN is annual U.S. Pacific Air Forces multilateral field training exercise with participants from the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, Japan Air Self-Defense Force and the Royal Australian Air Force. The primary intent of CN is to enhance coordination of combined air tactics, hone techniques and procedures while strengthening security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Balikatan 2018 | Air Community Experience

U.S. and Philippine military aircraft community personnel participated in a variety of subject matter exchange events at Clark Air Base, Calumpang, Mabalacat City, Philippines, during Exercise Balikatan 2018, held from May 7 to 18. The training was held to further interoperability between the U.S. and the Philippines, particularly among the various aircraft community members. William Pendleton Thompson Hill Award at Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan, December 8, 2017. MWSS-172 Marines competed to earn the title ‘Best Field Mess’ for the Asia-Pacific region. Established in 1985, the W.P.T Hill award was created to reward high quality food service by identifying the best mess halls and field messes throughout the Marine Corps and encouraging a commitment to excellence through competition.
