U.S. Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Chris McPhillips, relinquished command of 1st Marine Aircraft Wing (MAW) to Brig. Gen., Brian Cavanaugh, during a change of command ceremony on Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa, Japan, June 11, 2021. 1st Marine Aircraft Wing is the aviation combat element of III Marine Expeditionary Force. Its mission is to conduct air operations in support of the Fleet Marine Forces to include: offensive air support, anti-air support, aerial reconnaissance including active and passive electronic countermeasures, and control of aircraft and missiles.

An ACM drill is a simulated crisis response that must be executed within 24 hours to prepare the Marines of 1st MAW to mitigate emergencies, provide humanitarian aid, and/or counter threats to the U.S. national interests within the Indo-Pacific region. U.S. Marines with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron (HMH) 465 offload and rebuild a CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter on MCAS Futenma, Okinawa, Japan, Mar. 12, 2021. The CH-53E was transferred from Hawaii to Okinawa in support of Force Design 2030. The CH-53E was disassembled by HMH-463 in Hawaii to accommodate transport in a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft with the Alaska Air National Guard. After arriving at MCAS Futenma, HMH-465 rebuilt the aircraft and is now flying the CH-53E in support of III Marine Expeditionary Force operations and exercises. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Lance Cpl. U.S. Marines with Marine Wing Support Squadron (MWSS) 172 conduct expeditionary advanced base operations at various islands off the coast of, Okinawa, Japan, Feb. 19, 2021 during exercise Hagåtña Fury 21. MWSS-172 performed forward arming and refueling points with aircraft from 1st Marine Aircraft Wing and transported equipment on Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 465 CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters on Ukibaru island and Ie Shima. U.S. Marines with Marine Aviation Logistics (MALS) 36 received the Secretary of Defense Maintenance Award for their work in 2020 at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa, Japan, Jan. 28, 2021.
