The Bell UH-1Y Venom "The Huey" is a combat-proven utility helicopter slated to support the U.S. Marine Corps global missions for the next four decades. The Huey engages threats, delivers or exfiltrate personnel and performs under the most punishing operating conditions, making it the ultimate tactical utility helicopter. The UH-1Y Venom was first deployed with the U.S. Marine Corps in 2009. The Huey lineage can be traced back to combat action in Vietnam, but today’s UH-1Y is a thoroughly modern aircraft. The UH-1Y is generations ahead of its predecessors in terms of effectiveness, performance, and safety. The Huey operates in the most extreme environments, from Arctic cold to desert heat. Marine Aircraft Group 36, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, the first complete Marine air group to be transported by sea to a combat zone, launched from the USS Princeton to the shores of Vietnam, Sept. 1, 1965. Immediately, they began providing troop lifts, air strikes, medical evacuation, resupplies, and reconnaissance insertions and extractions in the southern area of operations. MAG-36 flew daily in support of Marines on the ground. Meanwhile, while many U.S. and South Vietnamese forces celebrated the Tet holiday, tens of thousands of North Vietnamese soldiers, Viet Cong guerrillas and local communist militants moved under the cover of night. Their objective was to simultaneously attack more than 100 U.S. and South Vietnamese occupied cities and bases. In the early hours of Jan. 31, 1968, the Communist-led Tet Offensive was in full force.

Marines with 1st Marine Aircraft Wing and 3rd Marine Division completed a four-day Tactical Combat Casualty Care course using the Tactical Medical Simulation Center, a III Marine Expeditionary Force asset, on Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, March 8, 2018. The course is designed to hone service-members’ critical thinking, tactical combat care skills and meet the diverse medical requirements needed while operating within the Pacific region. With a motto of “Eliminating preventable deaths on the battlefield,” the center provides the latest evidence-based combat medicine practices to as many Marines and Sailors as possible. Hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, 36 Mitsubishi G3M3 bombers attacked Wake Island on December 8, 1941. The island was defended by 449 Marines from the 1st Marine Defense Battalion with aid from a detachment of 50 Marines from VMF-211 with 12 F4F-3 Wildcats. For the first time, more than 2,000 U.S. Marines joined with approximately 1,500 service members with the Japan Self-Defense Force to support the first iteration of Exercise Northern Viper 2017, at Misawa Air Base and the island of Hokkaido, Japan, August 10-28, 2017. Northern Viper, an annual joint contingency exercise, tests the interoperability and bilateral capability of the JSDF and U.S. Marine Corps forces to work together across a variety of areas including peacekeeping operations, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. This exercise enhances and improves interoperability at the tactical level between the Marines and JSDF to keep the forces formidable and adaptive. NV17 showcases a highly-capable, forward-deployed U.S. military presence positioned with their Japanese partners to directly support the security of the Indo-Asia- Pacific region.
