Gunnery Sergeant Lackey
Roy J. Lackey joined the United States Marine Corps delayed entry program in February 2002 and attended boot camp at MCRD Parris Island, SC in June 2002. Upon graduation from boot camp he attended Marine Combat Training at the School of Infantry East, Camp Geiger, NC and proceeded to Ft Leonard Wood, Missouri to attend the Basic Engineer Equipment Operator course attaining the Heavy Equipment Operator MOS (1345).
Upon graduation, he was promoted to Lance Corporal and executed orders to 9th Engineer Support Battalion, Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan. While serving with 9th Engineer Support Battalion, he deployed to Camp Mujuk, Korea as part of Operation Huang So. He was promoted to Corporal in December 2003.
In January 2004 he executed permanent change of station orders to Marine Wing Support Squadron 273, Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, SC. While serving with MWSS 273 he attended Corporal’s Course and was sent back to Fort Leonard Wood, MO to attend the Non-Commissioned Officer Operator’s Course. While serving with Marine Wing Support Squadron 273 he deployed three times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and was promoted to Sergeant in July 2005. In January 2008 he executed orders to recruiting duty.
Upon graduation from Basic Recruiter School in March 2008, he was assigned to 6th Marine Corps District, Recruiting Station Columbia, Recruiting Sub-station (RSS) North Charleston, to serve as a canvassing recruiter. In January 2009, he was promoted to Staff Sergeant and in May of 2010, assumed the billet of Staff Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of RSS North Charleston.
In April of 2011, he executed orders to 11th Marine Regiment in San Diego, California where he served as the Engineer Equipment Chief and deployed with 3d Battalion 8th Marine Regiment as a Combat Support Advisor to the Afghan National Army 215th Corps 4th Combat Support Kandak in support of OEF 12.1. Upon his return from deployment, he attended Engineer Equipment Chiefs Course in Fort Leonard Wood, MO and Career Course in Camp Pendleton, CA.
In November of 2012, he executed orders to I Marine Expeditionary Force Civil Affairs Detachment and in June 2013 attended Civil Affairs School in Quantico, VA. In September 2013, he deployed to Belize as a Civil Affairs Team Chief in support of Special Operations Command South and upon his return he attended the Civil-Military Operations Planners Course. He deployed again in May 2014 to serve as a Civil-Military Operations Officer in support of Exercise Vital Prospect, an Australian 1st Hq Div Command Post Exercise.
In June 2014, he was assigned to Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force Crisis Response Central Command (SPMAGTF-CR-CC) and attended the Intermediate MAGTF Information Operations Practitioner Course at the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA. In September 2014 he deployed to Kuwait in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. He was then assigned to Task Force Al Asad, Iraq where he supported combat operations as the CMO planner. Upon his return from Iraq he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in July 2015. In August 2015, he executed permanent change of station orders to Marine Wing Support Detachment 24, Marine Aviation Group 24, Marine Corps Base Hawaii. GySgt Lackey attended Advanced Course in August 2016 and is currently serving with MWSD 24 as the Senior Enlisted Advisor.
GySgt Lackey’s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3rd award), and Combat Action Ribbon.
