MSgt Scottie E. Nelson
Scottie Nelson was born in Greenville, South Carolina in 1979. He graduated from Avon Park High School in Avon Park, Florida with the class of 1998. In June of 1998, he reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island to start his Marine Corps career. Upon graduating from boot camp, Private Nelson attended Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger, North Carolina. He was then transferred to Marine Corps Communication Electronics School in 29 Palms, California for Basic Electronics Course and Microcomputer Repair Course. He was promoted to the rank of Private First Class on December 1st 1998. Upon completion of this training, Private First Class Nelson was assigned the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) of 2818 Microcomputer Repairman.
Private First Class Nelson reported to Communication Electronics Maintenance Platoon, Service Company, 7th Communications Battalion, Okinawa, Japan in May of 1999. In August 1999, he was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.
In December 1999, Lance Corporal Nelson reported to the Communication Detachment, S-6, Command Element of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). During this time, he provided support for MEU exercises in Australia and Guam, as well as, embarked on the USS Belleau Wood during MEU Exercise/Special Operations Capabilities Exercise. Lance Corporal Nelson was promoted to the rank of Corporal in June of 2000 just prior to reporting back to 7th Communications Battalion.
Corporal Nelson attended Corporal’s Leadership Course in August of 2000, just before becoming Assistant Section Head for the Shipping and Receiving Section. He participated in Operation Cobra Gold in May of 2001 before being promoted to the rank of Sergeant in October.
In May 2002, Sergeant Nelson reported for duty as Assistance Section Head, Shipping and Receiving Section, Communication Electronics Maintenance Platoon, Service Company, Marine Wing Communications Squadron-28, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina. In December 2002, Sergeant Nelson was assigned as Platoon Sergeant for Communication Electronics Maintenance Platoon, Detachment A, Marine Wing Communication Squadron-28 (-) Reinforced for their deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon his return from the operation, Sergeant Nelson served as Platoon Sergeant for the Communications Electronics Maintenance Platoon. In February 2005, he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Staff Sergeant Nelson was transferred to Marine Corps Communication Electronics School in 29 Palms, California in April 2005. During this assignment he completed Advanced Electronics Course and Ground Data/Communications Maintenance Technicians Course. Completion of these classes resulted in his MOS change to 2862 Ground Communication Electronics Technician.
In January 2006, Staff Sergeant Nelson reported to Radio Platoon, Electronics Maintenance Company, 2nd Maintenance Battalion. In July 2006, he was appointed as Platoon Sergeant for Electronics Maintenance Platoon which would deploy in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom VI the following February. Upon his return from Iraq in September 2007, Staff Sergeant Nelson became Company Gunnery Sergeant for Electronics Maintenance Company.
In December 2008, Staff Sergeant Nelson received orders to Marine Corps Communication Electronics School in 29 Palms, California. During his tour he served as an instructor for the Ground Communication Organization Repair Course and Ground Radio Repair Course. Following his promotion to Gunnery Sergeant on August 1st, 2010, Gunnery Sergeant Nelson was appointed as Lead Instructor for the Amplitude Modulation/ Frequency Modulation Section.
In December 2011, Gunnery Sergeant Nelson reported to the Communications Training Center – 2, Marine Corps Communication Electronics School at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he developed a new course to inform his occupational specialty of changes that were occurring in his MOS.
Gunnery Sergeant Nelson reported to Wounded Warrior Battalion – East in December 2014 and started working as a section leader. He later ascended to the role of Platoon Commander in May 2015. Gunnery Sergeant Nelson was promoted to his present rank of Master Sergeant in February 2017.
In January 2018, Master Sergeant Nelson reported to his present assignment as S-6 Maintenance Chief, Personnel Support Detachment – 18, Marine Air Control Group – 18. He also serves as the detachment First Sergeant.
