MGySgt Kevin W. Layne
Master Gunnery Sergeant Kevin W. Layne is from Ledbetter, Kentucky. He entered the Marine Corps in August 1989 and completed recruit training at MCRD Parris Island, SC November 10th 1989. Following recruit training; PFC Layne attended Aviation Machinist Mate training at both NAS Millington, TN and NAS Cecil Field, FL where he earned the MOS (6017) as a Jet Engine Mechanic.
Lance Corporal Layne reported to VMFA-451 at his first duty station, MCAS Beaufort, SC, as a Powerline Mechanic. During his tour with the Warlords, he served as a Plane Captain, CDI, CDQAR and a Low/High Power Turn qualified mechanic. While assigned to VMFA-451, Lance Corporal Layne deployed in 1990 to Southwest Asia in support of Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
In August 1993, Corporal Layne was transferred to VMFA (AW)-224 for duty as a Powerline Mechanic. During his tour with The Bengals, he served as a Plane Captain, CDI, CDQAR, Night Crew Supervisor, and Day Crew Supervisor. While assigned to VMFA (AW)-224 Corporal Layne deployed to Aviano, Italy in support of Operation Deny Flight and Operation Provide Promise.
In August 1995, Sergeant Layne was transferred to Marine Corps Recruiting Command for recruiter’s school. Upon completion of school, Sergeant Layne reported to RS Cleveland, RSS Mansfield, Ohio. Sergeant Layne was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant in January 1998.
Upon successful completion of his recruiting tour, Staff Sergeant Layne reported to VMFA-321 on board Andrews AFB, MD in November 1998. While serving with the Hell’s Angels, Staff Sergeant Layne performed the duties of Powerline Division Chief and Maintenance Control SNCOIC.
In January 2003, Gunnery Sergeant Layne reported to VMFA (AW)-225 in MCAS Miramar, CA for duty. With the Vikings, he deployed to Al Jaber, Kuwait for Operation Southern Watch and Operation Iraqi Freedom in January 2003. Gunnery Sergeant Layne and the Vikings also deployed as part of the Unit Deployment Program in 2004 and again in 2005. Gunnery Sergeant Layne performed the duties of Powerline Division Chief and Maintenance Control Chief while serving with VMFA (AW)-225.
Master Sergeant Layne was transferred to Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One, MCAS Yuma, AZ in February 2007. While serving with MAWTS-1 he served as the Fixed Wing Maintenance Chief. Master Sergeant Layne transferred to VMFA-122 MCAS Beaufort, SC in July 2009. During his tour with the Werewolves he performed the duties as the Maintenance Chief.
In July 2010, Master Gunnery Sergeant Layne transferred to VMFA-251 to serve as the Maintenance Chief. The Thunderbolts deployed aboard the USS Enterprise and supported Operations Enduring Freedom and New Dawn in 2011 and again in 2012. Master Gunnery Sergeant Layne transferred to MALS-12 MCAS Iwakuni, Japan in August 2013. He served as the Maintenance Chief until February 2018. He is currently the Senior Enlisted Advisor for MALS-12.
Master Gunnery Sergeant Layne’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medal, and the Good Conduct medal.
Master Gunnery Sergeant Layne holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Health and Wellness from Ashford University.
